Strategic Planning Step 2: Create Your Desired State

When was the last time you dreamt about the future of your organization?

I’m not talking about careful planning or smart strategizing for the future (we’ll get to that in steps 4 and 5 of the strategic planning process). I’m talking about real dreaming – expansive, unbound, imaginative thought – about what’s possible for your nonprofit organization.

Today’s training video is all about dreaming, as we jump into step two of the strategic planning process and create your nonprofit’s desired state.  When you envision the future, what do you want to see for your organization and in the world?

In this training video you’ll learn:

  • A powerful visioning technique that will help you and your strategic planning team envision what’s possible for your organization
  • How to write great mission and vision statements for your nonprofit
  • One simple exercise that will paint a complete picture of your organization’s desired state (see below for a worksheet to help you out with this one!)

The second strategic planning worksheet will take you step-by-step through one of my favorite strategic planning exercises called “What’s a 10?”  It’s a fun and simple exercise that will help you create a complete picture of your organization’s desired state.

As Gloria Steinem once said, “Without leaps of imagination or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities.  Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning.”

So take a few minutes this afternoon to dream up your organization’s desired state. I dare you.

P.S. – This video is step 2 in my new free series, 5 Simple Steps to Strategic Planning Success.  In this 5-part training series, you’ll get short, easy-to-follow videos and actionable worksheets that will demystify the strategic planning process and help you develop a strategic plan for your nonprofit … one step at a time.  In case you missed it, here’s a link to video #1.
